What charity does this race support?
The Fed Cup 5K is a health and wellness event for the Federal and Military community. This race is not a fundraiser for charitable organizations. You'll notice our entry fee is much lower than that of many other races. All money generated by this race is used to pay the current race bills and provide the funds to get the next year's race started. No Steering Committee Member is paid for their services. All money paid to, or donated to, the Fed Cup goes to the Fed Cup.

This is a very common question, and it just highlights the generous nature of military members and civil servants. The Fed Cup is not opposed to the idea of one day making this health and wellness event a charitable fundraiser as well. If we keep growing, we could possibly have the means to make a charitable donation as well as pay for the race. We're open to any ideas and suggestions anyone may have regarding this matter.

Which category should I sign up for?
If you are an INDIVIDUAL (meaning not part of a team) signing up for the event, simply check the appropriate box for your situation. Your choices are:
    Men’s individual 5K run
    Men’s Individual 5K walk
    Women’s individual 5K run
    Women’s individual 5K walk

If you are signing up as part of a RUNNING team, you have a few more choices:

Men’s Team: A Men’s team must have a minimum of 4 male team members. Select one member to serve as team captain. Team captains serve as a contact point for the whole team. As a team, choose a team name. After the race, the team finish time will be calculated by the first 4 runners to cross the finish line.

Women’s Team: A Women’s team must have a minimum of 4 female team members. Select one member to serve as team captain. Team captains serve as a contact point for the whole team. As a team, choose a team name. After the race, the team finish time will be calculated by the first 4 runners to cross the finish line.

Co-Ed Team: Co-Ed teams have a minimum of 4 members, any age/gender composition. There must be, at a minimum, at least one of each gender on a team. Select one member to serve as team captain. Team captains serve as a contact point for the whole team. As a team, choose a team name. After the race, the team finish time will be calculated by the first 4 runners to cross the finish line.

If you are signing up as part of a WALKING team, it gets easier. Walking teams have no restrictions on team composition; the teams can be single gender or co-ed and consist of any ages, but must still have a minimum of 4 members. Select one member to serve as team captain. Team captains serve as a contact point for the whole team. As a team, choose a team name. After the race, the team finish time will be calculated by the first 4 runners to cross the finish line.

I want to sign up as a walker. What are the rules for walkers?
Simply put, a walker cannot run (or jog, or skip, or jump). If you think you will run and alternately walk the course, sign up as a runner. Why are we so strict on this? Because this is a timed event. It’s not just the runners who take this event seriously; we have quite a few competitive walkers as well. Anyone moving in any fashion other than walking will unfairly affect the finish times for this category.

That does not mean you can’t walk fast, or race walk. Just DON’T run, not even for a few steps. Any walkers caught running will be disqualified.

Race Walking Rules: The actual definition from the USATF Definition of Race Walking. Race Walking is a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the ground so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs. The advancing leg must be straightened (i.e., not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until the leg is in the vertical upright position. In practice we enforce the contact rule but not the bent knee rule. I.E.) If you break into a run you will be breaking the contact rule, whereas if you don't have good form you could be inadvertently breaking the bent knee rule without running.

I want to sign up as a runner. What are the rules for runners?
Simply put, a runner can run and walk. If you know you won’t be running the whole 5K distance, please line up at the back of the pack so that the more serious runners can race for position.

I want to sign up a team. How do I do that??
Are you walking or running? If you are walking, all you need is four or more individuals to be a team. There are no restrictions on team composition- walking teams can be of any ages, single gender, or co-ed. Once you have found at least four team mates, choose one to be your team captain, and then decide upon a team name.

If you are running, you have a few more decisions to make. There are three team running categories: Men's, Women's, and Co-ed. Each category requires a minimum of for runners to be a team. Runners also need to choose a team captain and decide upon a team name.

Your team may include individuals from a single agency, component, or military branch, or your team may be a combination there of. It's fun to have the friendly rivalry of single agency teams, and we encourage it, but we don't want people from the smaller agencies, or those retired, or those feds attending from out-of-state, to think they cannot join a team. Mixed agency teams are acceptable. Anyone eligible to enter this race is elegible to form a team if they so choose.

For more information on team composition, please refer to the "Which category should I sign up for?" FAQ.

The team finish time is calculated by the first four runners to cross the finish line.

What do team captains do? Team captains serve as a point of contact for the whole team. Also, team captains are the only ones who can establish their team in the Active.com registration. So, if anyone on your team wishes to register online, the team captain must be the first one to do so. Team captains establish the team name in Active, so all subsequent team entrants can simply choose their team name from a drop-down menu when registering.

As long as the team name on the paper entries is IDENTICAL to the team name listed in Active, teams can register using both Active.com and the paper registration. Be very careful when doing this, however, becuase if the team names do not match EXACTLY, the timing company will not be able to sort the entries into the proper teams for scoring. Misspellings can result in the establishment of a new team!

Even if everyone in your team will be registering using the paper entry form option only, it is important that everyone spell the team the EXACTLY the same on all team race applications.

Please feel free to be creative with your team names! Fun team names add to the whole atmosphere of the Federal Cup. However, the Fed Cup does reserve the right to change any team names that could possibly be offensive. The team will be notified if the Steering Committee sees cause to do so. We've never, in the history of this event, had to change a team name, and we hope we never will!

    What is the award structure?
The Federal Cup offers many opportunities to earn recognition for a race well run (or walked)!

Individual runners or walkers compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals for each age group by gender. The age groups are: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, & 70+

Running teams ultimately compete for a chance to win the Fed Cup- a traveling trophy awarded to the overall fastest team. Medals are also awarded to the 1st place finishes in the Men’s, Women’s, and Co-Ed team categories.

Started in 2008, the Walking teams can compete for a Fed Cup of their own! The overall fastest walking team will be awarded a special traveling Fed Cup. Medals will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place team finishes.

Yes, but do be courteous to the other people on the course. If you’re out to enjoy a fun family walk, please give way (or give the line to) the people actively competing in this event. If you’re competing with a baby jogger, do be mindful of the other people on the course to avoid collision.

What is the policy on unattended children?
We do our best to keep the Fed Cup a fun and safe family event. However, it is not permitted to leave children 12 and younger unattended at the park during the race. Race day is a very hectic day, and while there are Fed Cup representatives at the park, they are focused on running the race- not watching your children.

Children 12 and younger can ONLY wait in the park if they have a responsible individual accompanying them at ALL times. A responsible individual can be a sibling 13 and older, or another family member. It is not the Fed Cup's responsibility to watch children.

I want to walk with my small children on the course. Do they have to register?
Everybody running or walking on the course must be registered. Once a child is independently mobile, and will not be carried, pushed, or pulled in any sort of conveyance along the course, that child must be a registered participant to be allowed on the course. This is a matter of safety, and we appreciate your cooperation.
